Search for A2 ghee and the prices make no sense. One litre for ₹750. Another for ₹1,600. A third for ₹3,200, with a cow on the label that looks exactly like the one on the ₹750 jar. Here is what the A2 ghee price in India actually reflects, so you can tell what you are paying for.
Quick Answer
Genuine A2 desi cow ghee made by the bilona method usually costs somewhere between ₹1,300 and ₹2,500 a litre in 2026, and single-breed ghee from named herds can cost more. Mass-market dairy ghee sells for roughly ₹550 to ₹750. "A2 bilona" ghee priced near that lower band is the one to question, because the milk alone costs more than that.
What Each Price Band Usually Buys You
| Price per litre (approx., Oct 2026) | What it usually is | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| ₹550 to ₹750 | Mass-market dairy ghee, made from cream | Real ghee, legitimately sold. Not bilona, and not from a single breed. |
| ₹800 to ₹1,200 | Premium "desi" or cow ghee, usually cream-based | Check the method. "Desi" alone tells you little. |
| ₹1,100 to ₹2,000 | Buffalo bilona ghee | Buffalo milk is naturally A2; the ghee is white, not yellow. |
| ₹1,300 to ₹2,500 | A2 desi cow bilona ghee | Curd-churned, indigenous breeds, small batches. |
| ₹2,500 and above | Single-breed (one named breed) bilona ghee | You are paying for traceability to one breed and herd. |
Ranges are approximate, based on what is listed on shelves and marketplaces in October 2026. They move with milk prices and season.
The Per-Kg vs Per-Litre Trick
Some brands price by weight, some by volume, and the two are not the same. Ghee is lighter than water: a litre weighs only around 900 grams. So a "1 kg" jar holds more ghee than a "1 litre" jar, and a 500 g pack holds more than a 500 ml one.
To compare fairly, convert. Price per litre ÷ 0.9 gives you a rough price per kg. A ₹1,599 litre works out to about ₹1,775 a kg.
Why A2 Bilona Ghee Costs More
The milk
Bilona ghee is made from whole milk set into curd, not from separated cream. It takes roughly 30 litres of milk to make one litre. Cream ghee needs far less milk per litre, which is the biggest single reason for the price gap.
The cows
A2 milk comes from indigenous breeds, and most desi breeds give less milk than the high-yield crossbred cattle that supply large dairies. Less milk per cow means more cows, and more cost, for every jar. Our post on A2 vs A1 milk explains what the A2 label does and does not mean.
The time
Overnight culturing, hand-churning and slow simmering take about four times as long as the cream route. The full process is in what is bilona ghee, and the cost side is in why bilona ghee is expensive.
When a Low Price Is a Red Flag
- "A2 bilona" for under about ₹1,000 a litre. The arithmetic does not work. Either it is not bilona, or something else is in the jar.
- No breed or region named anywhere. "A2" with no source is a sticker.
- Yellow "buffalo" ghee. Buffalo milk has almost no beta-carotene, so pure buffalo ghee is white.
- An ingredient list with anything besides milk fat or ghee. Under FSSAI's food product standards, ghee is a milk-fat product. Vanaspati blends carry industrial trans fat, which the WHO links to heart disease.
FSSAI's DART guide has simple tests you can run on a jar at home, and we walk through them in असली घी की पहचान कैसे करें.
What a High Price Does Not Guarantee
Paying ₹3,000 does not make ghee pure. A high price buys the claims on the label, not proof of them. Look for the FSSAI licence, ask for a batch lab report, and do the home tests whatever you paid.
And a ₹650 jar of plain dairy ghee is not fake. It is a different, cheaper product made a different way. If that is what fits your budget, buy it with your eyes open, and check the label for vanaspati.
Where Our Ghee Sits
| NavPrana ghee | 500 ml | 1 litre |
|---|---|---|
| A2 Desi Cow Bilona Ghee | ₹799 | ₹1,599 |
| A2 Buffalo Bilona Ghee | ₹699 | ₹1,399 |
Both are curd-churned in the Chambal valley near Morena and come in glass jars. To be straight about it: we do not sell single-breed ghee. Our milk comes from indigenous breeds kept by smallholder farming families, which is why we sit in the middle of the A2 bilona band rather than at the top.
