How Much Ghee Per Month? 500 ml or 1 Litre for a Family
How much ghee per month does your household actually get through? You have decided which ghee to buy, and now there is one question left, and it is the one people stare at for a minute before guessing: which size. Order too small and you run out mid-month and pay shipping twice. Order too big and a jar sits open in your kitchen for eight months slowly losing what you paid for. The answer is arithmetic, and it takes about thirty seconds.
The Quick Answer
A family of four that cooks Indian food daily and uses ghee for tadka plus rotis gets through roughly 700 ml to 1 litre a month. For them the 1 litre pack is the right call. A couple using ghee mainly on rotis and occasionally in cooking uses closer to 300 to 400 ml a month, which makes 500 ml the sensible size. A single person or an occasional user should stay at 500 ml regardless, because ghee ages once opened.
Work Out Your Number
| Household | How you cook | Per month | Buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 person | Occasional, on rotis or rice | 100-200 ml | 500 ml |
| 1 person | Daily, cooking plus morning ritual | 250-350 ml | 500 ml |
| Couple | Mostly on rotis, some cooking | 300-400 ml | 500 ml |
| Couple | Ghee as the main cooking fat | 500-700 ml | 1 litre |
| Family of 4 | Tadka plus rotis, daily | 700 ml-1 litre | 1 litre |
| Family of 4 | Ghee for all cooking, frying, sweets | 1-1.5 litre | 1 litre, reorder monthly |
| Family of 6+ | Daily Indian cooking | 1.5-2 litre | Two 1 litre jars |
| Growing kids or gaining weight | Add 3-4 tsp per person daily | Add ~450 ml per person | Size up |
The One-Minute Calculation
If your household does not match a row above, do it yourself. One teaspoon is about 5 ml.
- Count the teaspoons of ghee your household uses in a normal day. Include the tadka, the spoon on rotis, the ghee in rice, the night milk.
- Multiply by 5 to get millilitres per day.
- Multiply by 30.
So a family using twelve teaspoons across a day works out to roughly 60 ml a day, which is about 1.8 litres a month. A couple using five teaspoons a day lands near 750 ml.
Most people are surprised by how high the number runs once they count the cooking fat rather than only the visible spoon. If yours comes out much higher than you expected, that is worth noticing for a second reason: ICMR-NIN's Dietary Guidelines for Indians set ceilings on total visible fat per person, and ghee counts inside that along with oil and butter. Our guide on how much ghee per day is safe has the per-person breakdown.
When the Bigger Jar Saves You Money
- You will finish it within three months. This is the only rule that really matters.
- You cross the free shipping threshold with one order instead of two, so you stop paying delivery twice.
- You cook with ghee rather than only garnishing with it. Cooking fat consumption is several times higher than table use, and people consistently underestimate it.
- You have kids, or someone in the house is deliberately gaining weight , both of which push usage up fast.
When the Bigger Jar Is a Waste
Buying more than you will use is not thrift, it is a slow loss.
Pure ghee keeps for 9 to 12 months after opening, helped by the very low moisture the FSSAI standard for ghee allows. That sounds generous until you remember that the clock starts the day you open it and every wet spoon and every temperature swing shortens it. A litre jar that takes ten months to finish spends most of that time oxidising, and oxidation is what eventually turns ghee rancid. You paid for aroma and nutrition that quietly left.
Skip the bigger pack if you use ghee occasionally, if you are trying it from a new brand for the first time, if your kitchen runs hot for months at a stretch, or if you are the only one in the house eating it. Our guide on storing ghee covers how to protect whichever size you pick, and the single habit that ruins jars early.
Buying Two Small Jars Instead of One Big One
There is a middle option people miss. Two 500 ml jars cost a little more than one litre, but only one is open at a time. The sealed jar stays sealed, which for a household that takes four or five months to get through a litre is genuinely the better trade.
The same logic works within a single large jar: decant a small working jar for the kitchen and keep the big one closed in a cool cupboard. Then the large jar gets opened four times instead of four hundred.
The Honest Version of This Advice
We sell ghee, so treat a size recommendation from us with the appropriate suspicion. Here is the version that costs us money.
If you are ordering from us for the first time, buy the 500 ml. Taste it, look at how it sets, check the aroma, run it past the seven checks . Size up on the second order once you know both that you like it and what your household actually gets through. A litre of ghee you end up not enjoying is a worse outcome for you than a second delivery charge.
And if your monthly number came out very high, the useful question may not be which pack size. It may be whether the household is eating more fat than it needs.
Whichever Size, the Method Is the Same
Pack size changes nothing about what is inside. Ours is whole A2 milk set into curd, hand-churned into makkhan, then simmered on a low flame, which is the bilona method . One ingredient, small batches, grainy in the jar. Choosing between cow and buffalo? The comparison guide covers it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Ek mahine me kitna ghee lagta hai?
Chaar log ke parivar ke liye jo roz Indian khana banata hai, lagbhag 700 ml se 1 litre mahine ka. Do log ke liye 300 se 400 ml. Akele rehne walon ke liye 200 se 350 ml. Asli hisaab ye hai: din bhar mein kitne chammach ghee lagta hai, usse 5 se guna karein, phir 30 se.
Ghee 500ml ya 1 litre kaunsa le?
Seedha niyam: agar teen mahine ke andar khatam ho jayega to 1 litre lein. Nahi to 500 ml.
Tabhi jab aap use samay par khatam kar lein. Agar ek litre ka jar aath mahine khula pada rahega, to jo bachaya wo kharab hone mein chala gaya. Ek aur tarika hai: do 500 ml ke jar lein, ek band rakhein aur ek istemal karein. Thoda mehnga padta hai par nuksan kam hota hai.
Does ghee go bad before a family finishes 1 litre?
Not for most households. Pure ghee keeps 9 to 12 months after opening with no refrigeration, and a family of four typically finishes a litre in four to six weeks. The risk sits with small households, not large ones.
How often should I reorder?
Work out your monthly figure from the table, then order when about a quarter of the jar is left. That leaves room for delivery time without a gap, and stops you buying a substitute in a hurry.
Can I freeze or refrigerate a large jar to make it last?
Refrigeration is not needed and does not help much, since ghee has almost no water for bacteria to use. Cool, dark and airtight does more, and so does a dry spoon every time. Full method in our storage guide .
